Our Story
Birds fly over the al Hambra palace, Granada Spain. Our view of their flight is restricted in scope and time by the framing archway.
The benefits of advances in science and technology are wondrous and pervasive. But are there downsides we are overlooking?
The I-SHARPE Club (Students at the Intersection of Science/Health Technology and Religion/Philosophy/Ethics) convenes to study and discuss current issues at the forefront of science and health technology and how they interact with (or come into conflict with) established human norms as defined by religion/ philosophical truths/ and ethics.
The Club is hosted at the Noor ul Iman (NUI) School in South Brunswick NJ. NUI is a private, parochial school accredited by the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools. As one the the earliest Muslim schools established in the United States, NUI has helped set the standard for preparing student scholars and responsible citizens who are rooted in the Muslim faith tradition and who carry a unique Muslim-American identity.
Faaris A Khan conceived and founded the I-SHARPE club as a sophomore at the Noorul Iman school in South Brunswick NJ
Issues (or “big ideas”) for the Club are proposed and chosen by the President and Vice-President of the club in consultation with Club members and teacher advisors. Students meet monthly to discuss their review of reading material and relevant literature or other content on the subject matter. At the end of each 2 month cycle the Club meets for a moderated discussion with a national thought leader or researcher in that domain. Guests are invited to join the discussion by Zoom. Questions are prepared beforehand by student members for the expert guests.
